Gig Review- Spellgaze and Supports in Leicester
This venue holds yet another great night! Filled with people and lively vibes, the Big Difference created a great crowd excited for the bands to start playing on Saturday 12 October.
The night started at 7:30pm with a talented artist called Honest Dave. Throughout their set the two of them used a guitar and a saxophone to create a mystical sound which engaged the entire crowd, and used echoes to pass on a story via each song. They played many original songs, some of our favourites being ‘Elephant In The Room’ and ‘I Am A Witch’. During their set they also set the room alight by including the crowd in the performing of one of their songs where the crowd clapped along to the rhythm. This created a lovely sense of community during their time on stage. For more information on this artist, their Instagram is here.
At 8:30pm the second support band came on, a four-piece local band called The Cause. Capturing the audience immediately with original songs, the band played such an energetic set. They also covered Blur’s ‘Song 2’ during the set and performed a great take of it, judging from the responses the crowd agreed too. Some of our favourite original songs that they played were ‘Five Lost Souls’, which the band briefly mentioned about releasing sometime in the future, and ‘Memories’ which they had released just over a month ago, available on Spotify. The atmosphere that they created through their stage presence and songs perfectly set the audience up for the main act. For more information on this band, their Instagram is here.
At 9:30pm it was time for Spellgaze to come on. The band was established in April 2023 and are influenced by a variant of contemporary and non-western genres of music. The group consists of Ben Harrisson (on vocals, guitar), Pedro Tolloto (on drums) and Sam McLean (on bass). This band felt electric with their playing and their stage attitudes. The stage had been set up with pretty candle stands and the spotlights had been turned off to create a spooky yet intriguing scene. When it was time for the band to come onto the stage the room was full of people ready to hear them play, and so they did. They played many original songs along with one cover of ‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie- and this adaptation was amazing to have heard. The entire setlist will be printed below however some of our favourites they played were ‘Crawler’, which they ended the night on and is their newest release, and ‘Abyss’.
‘I think it was very different in terms of genre of music through the night, with Honest Dave being more fascinating and fairytale-like in contrast to Spellgaze being rocky and upbeat but it was a great variation from the Big Difference that I haven’t seen before and I was impressed with all three bands tonight.’ – Henry, an audience member.
