Live Gig- June 24, The Breeders in Leeds

The (mostly) American rock band The Breeders performed at Leeds 02 Academy on the 24 June as a stop on their UK tour. Kim Deal mentioned briefly on stage during the show that the last gig they had played was at The garage, in London, which she said to had been their first show in the UK this tour. They were also supported by a band called Big Joanie, which tied the gig together perfectly. Big Joanie played original songs along with one cover which held relevance to them as a band- a few of the original songs being ‘Used to be Friends’, ‘A Confident Man’ and a personal favourite: ‘Today’. These songs dug into the crowd and managed to cause right a positive reaction from the audience, it was clear that these women from London were rocking the stage the whole way through their set.

After, The Breeders came on stage and played a full set including tracks off of their popular album ‘The Last Splash’ and other tracks dotted throughout their music timeline- see below for the full setlist.

The set line-up created a beautiful atmosphere in the Leeds’ 02 Academy space, the projectors off of the stage bouncing into the crowd colouring the entire room. Adding onto this, the venue’s stage was lower than other 02’s, creating more of a connection between the crowd and the artists. The band started off the gig with a classic everyone knew, ‘Saints’ which immediately boosted the energy in the room with it’s lively tuning. Playing a few songs from their album ‘Pod’ throughout the set as well, many fans of different eras could enjoy the music they were playing. Their encore then finalized the night with ‘Divine Hammer’, another off of their album ‘The Last Splash’ and a staple for every Breeders fan.

Overall you could not miss the electric in the room, especially at the end of their set after the finale where the band handed out setlists to the audience members and Jim Macpherson also handed out his set of drumsticks to a lucky fan over the crowd. The best part of all this is that they continue their tour now- find out more on their Instagram here.
